A & D Museum of Art

The A & D Museum of Art is the first private museum of antique art in Mongolia. The museum was founded by Altangerel Ayurzana, a well known curator, collector and connoisseur of Mongolian antiques, and his spouse Dulamsuren Sukhee. The pieces of art showcased on this website are mostly Mongolian in origin and range from the early bronze artifacts of the Hunnu period (insert dates) to magnificent Buddhist sculptures cast by the famous Lord Zanabazar (1635-1723), the followers of his school. The collection contains numerous other rare cultural and religious artifacts. The museum is a must-visit spot for visitors who desire to observe and enjoy the distinct flavour of the Mongolian ancient arts and immerse themselves in the depth of magnificent history of the Eurasian steppes.

The A & D Museum of Art, located on the Toursit Street in Ulaanbaatar, warmly welcomes discerning visitors.

Mission statement

The founders and supporters of the A & D Museum of Art see their main mission in contributing to the preservation of Mongolia's historical and cultural heritage for the benefit of all ethnic Mongols as well as all citizens of the world interested in the Mongols' contribution to global history, culture and art. This task is as important as challening for a number of reasons. First, unlike in the case of sedentary civilizations, the preservation of history, culture and art of nomadic populations is always an arduous task due to their high mobility. Secondly, the socialist regime that reigned in Mongolia for nearly 70 years severely repressed and consciously sought to destroy the traditional Mongolian culture, Buddhism and shamanism branding them as incompatible with the building of a modern socialist society. Third, although the post-socialist democratic transition triggered an energetic revival, reconstitution and promotion of traditional religion, Shamanism, history and traditions, due to the wide-spread poverty and continued economic hardships, Mongolian government and citizenry are still unable to effectively preserve for public benefit priceless pieces of great historical and artistic value. In this context, the A & D Museum of Art seeks to make its own unique and valuable contribution to this end by collecting, curating and displaying valuable items of the past found on the territory of Mongolia or elsewhere in order to educate Mongolians and non-Mongolians on the art, history and culture of the nomadic civilizations that made the Eurasian steppes their home at one time or another.
